Location
Friends on Liteiny is located on the first floor of a historic building constructed in the second half of the nineteenth century. The hostel is just one stop on public transport from PloshchadVosstaniya where Moscow Station, one of the city’s biggest railway stations, is located.
Just a short stroll from the main entrance is the city’s main thoroughfare, NevskyProspekt, with its bright lights and street signs, lively hustle and bustle, and diverse crowds of people out on the town orrushing to and from work. If you turn right along Nevsky Prospekt, you’ll soon come to Ulitsa Rubinsteina, where some of the city’s cosiest, most fashionable cafes and restaurants are clustered. This street leads to the well-known Five Corners intersection. And if you continue straight along Nevsky Prospekt, in no more than a minute you’ll find yourself at the famous Anichkov Bridge, with its Horse Tamers by Russian sculptor Klodt. This is also where the river boats, which do a roaring trade in the summer months, depart from.
If you walk on a bit further, you’ll soon see a kaleidoscope of historic buildings and tourist attractions open up before you: the Catherine Garden, the Comedy Theatre, Malaya Sadovaya Ulitsa, Gostiny Dvor, Kazan Cathedral, Singer House, the Church of the Saviour on the Blood… Continuing on for about a kilometre and a half, you’ll find yourself in the heart of St. Petersburg, in Palace Square, where you can visit the State Hermitage Museum or take in the amazing views from the banks of the Neva.

What was here before:
The building at 61 Liteiny Prospekt, richly decorated in an eclectic style, was designed by the architect Mikhail Makarov for the merchant I.I. Antonov in 1871–1885. It was once an apartment building. It is one of the few surviving historic buildings in St. Petersburg, which has not been rebuilt. In 2001, the building was listed as a “building newly identified as being of historic, academic, artistic, or other cultural value.”
